How do I write a business plan?

I want to open a business and apply for an SBA (Small Business Loan), but from what I understand, in order to apply you must have a business plan prepared. If I tried to prepare one now, I would just be wasting my time because I have no idea what should be in it or what to discuss. Can anyone suggest a web site with a rubrick or some information about this?

  2. First of all did you know that the SBA does not "give" loans to businesses? They simply co-sign loans for people with good business ideas / plans that are turned down by commercial banks. You will first need to apply for bank loans on your own using your own credit history and personal assets.

www.sba.gov will give you more information about the SBA.

There are various business plan software titles out there on the market... check Ebay, Amazon, and/or whatever shopping assistant you like. Check out the trial demos until you decide what you like.

You can get workbooks from the library which gives samples of business plans and asks you the questions that you need to fill in. Your chances for a loan are only as good as the time an energy your put into a business plan. A good business plan will show your forecasts of profit and loss in a realistic manner. If you show you can hit a break even point in 30 days, either you have an unbelieveable business (good) or an unbelieveable business (bad).

Your SBA loan will be a last resort, not a first thought.

  6. You can surf the internet, I know there are sites that offer "templates" to help you but you have to pay for them. They are very hard work and time consuming to create one. I've done 2 of them.
  7. Huge undertaking. You need a business statement (what you propose to do), you need projections, not pulled out of the air look up stats from your area a good web site is the census bureau, then you can use those averages. You need your resume and any ones who will be working with you that is an asset. You need a business plan that will include all pertinant information. That will get you started. Most Universities that have a small bs. incubator will help you with what you need. Good luck.
