Need some help with business planning (training). I am trying to put together a yearly plan for training?

I work for a private care home company, we have 10 homes in various locations in scotland. what I want to do is make a proposal to my boss that we nominate 1 member of staff to become the company training officer so I need to deivise a plan of training so I can show him that it can be done. so that would be 6 different types of training in 10 different care homes over 47 weeks. if anyone has experience of thisor knows a website where I can get a template id be very grateful.

  1. Actually the answer above is fairly good but I think it misses a step or two.

If I was your boss I would think you've come to me with the answer you want, not a solution to any problem I'm aware of (I'm just playing the Donald Trump boss here).

Start by defiing the training need (as you have started in the question sub-text) but start it from - "this is what we need" and "this is what we have now". The define how that's a problem ... no problem, no solution needed.

Show a sensible path by which you would get there (to fix the 'problem'). You can't expect everyone just to go off on a course in one week and solve the problem.

Put forward options for managing that path (that's where your training officer comes in)

Then for the most part, see answer above.
  2. It`s always good to get some views and the choice will always be yours of course, though I suspect you have a great idea of were you will be going. Is there a clear and idetifiable need for training? Is the need to fill some gap and training may or may not do the job? What advantage would training bring to your employers? (I ask this because they will be more interected in what good they will get rather than the employees) There are so many ways, techniques it would be hard to pin point what would be just right but on the whole I think you will find diversity (cultural, ethical and social exclusion are still the buzz), I would suggest `service/client or end user involvfement ( a new word for this may brighten things a bit) and of course the over all objective of the training, (taking on board diversity training may mean that new markets may be open to the employer which means increased productivity)
  3. First you need to cost it. Questions to ask include:

Will the training officer get any extra pay, be an extra post, or just be expected to do the extra work for nothing?

How many staff will the training cover?

What's the cost of taking those staff out of work for training time?

Will we need to pay extra for someone to cover their work while staff are being trained?

What about the cost of the training venue and the trainer?

What will it cost to write the training or buy it in?

Is it cheaper to contract the whole service to an outside training provider?

Then you need to look at the benefits. Questions to ask include:

What do we want the training to achieve? (Be very specific; you can't quantify a vague outcome like 'better trained staff', but you can quantify ' all staff will be able to execute procedure x or know legislation y after training'.

How are we going to measure its effectiveness? (Eg tests at 3 and 6 months after training, number of errors on forms, or whatever works for your particular needs.)

What will it contribute to achieving the goals in our business plan?

Are we prepared for the fact that better trained staff may get better pay and prospects elsewhere and do we have a plan to keep them after training?

Once you know what it will cost you and how it impacts your business plan, your boss can decide whether to go ahead.

    best of luck!
  4. I can see why my question would be a little top heavy in terms of the answers given, the important part was at the end where I was looking for a tried and tested template to present a years worth of in-house training to my boss. care homes always need training but dont always get the level of staff morale required to have them take time out of their day to attend a course in a local college, so I want to bring the training to the staff, I want to be able to be flexible and travel round each of our homes and train every member of staff in relevent subjects. the costing side isnt too important to me at the moment as I know for a fact it would be much cheaper for the company, so I can deal with that once I have a definiate plan, basically I want to put a sheet of paper in front of my boss and say this is how it is possible. then I an tell him how much he will save
